Facilitator – Natalie Sturr NOTE-TAKER- Sara Greenleaf
Key Issues/Topics (Suggeseted discussion questions:):
1. Do we need local/state/national/international guidelines from an authoritative source? Which one/ones?
2. Specific issues:
a. One LH record or multiple
b. On print record or no?
3. What is the impact of these types of decisions on display, access, and ILL?
4. Does FRBR make this a non-issue?
Outcomes:
1. Suggestions for future enhancements
2. Guidelines/recommendations
Notes from this group
Introductions.
LHR's and non-print holdings.
Lack of standards.
Worrying about not being "up to snuff"
Uses MFHD for URLs, instead of Bibs.
How do you keep up with adding backfiles and rolling years?
Standard note with global edit update. Look for standard text pulled from another field.
Do you put all ejournals in your catalog?
Quick and dirty records with mail merge, etc.
Stable things only, when purchased or JSTOR/Project Muse.
Serials solutions instead of catalog.
Impact on resource sharing when focus is on Serials Solutions?
eSerials holdings - level one attachment only
serving 2 different groups - end-users and resource sharing
How do I share my ejournals with other libraries?
eSerials holdings - turn on or off
export from SS to OCLC on a title basis is automatic
communication/accuracy when vendor drops a title is inconsistent
holdings sometimes updated on print records, which may impact print holdings/LHRs
resource sharing. We can only say what we own, with eSerials holdings. Details of what is held is blank.
getting from WorldCat to Serials Solutions?
How do I know what I can share or loan?
read license
find person at institution (or consortium) who manages licenses
Cataloging rules - historically dictate separate records for each format and each vendor
evolved into separate records per format, but 856 is attached to both records for people using one record
vendor-neutral record
single-record approach must be hand-edited; cannot support repeated loads
IDS -- what is it?
RapidILL? Anyone looking at it?
Digital ILL service housed at U. Colorado. Creates database working with ILLiad and Cleo. (Additional details - Sara is a little lost.)
Pricing between $4K-$7K. Hamilton is part of Oberlin pod. Nylink should look into RapidILL.
Do we need MARC records in our catalog (for ejournals) if Serials Solutions worked with Resource Sharing?
depends on local needs
maybe not if ERM in place
Open source ERM (CUFTS) being installed at SUNY New Paltz
ERM. Pulls together staff-side information that is currently disparate. Can assign roles and have accounts - security.
Public interface as well (downtime, licensing restrictions, etc.).
Can pull together related holdings in browseable list.
Related discussions on expense and staff time (or lack thereof).
Advantage in tracking from start to finish, esp. when spending large amounts of money on these resources.
Top Concerns
1. E-Resources are a pain in the butt.
2. Serials Solutions and OCLC to talk to each other about holdings details. Patrons are confused.
3. Are there other solutions we can attack now, ourselves? IDS, RapidILL, CUFTS
4. Standard notes and controls.
5. Balance between what we can all manage, based on staff and budget, vs. good citizenship and the responsibility we have to resource sharing
6. eSerials Holdings - level one is not useful in resource sharing; don't want to risk overwriting other holdings;
